How a Thangka Is Made: The Full Process

Creating a Thangka is a meditative and disciplined process.

  1. Sketching the sacred proportions The master draws the deity according to canonical measurements.
  2. Applying base colors Mineral pigments are layered to build the foundation.
  3. Detailing the face and gestures The eyes, hand mudras, and ornaments are painted with extreme precision.
  4. Gold outlining Gold powder is used to highlight divine radiance.
  5. Blessing and mounting The finished Thangka is blessed and mounted on silk brocade. A single Thangka may take weeks or months. The value lies not in speed, but in devotion and mastery.
